2013年10月8日降雨以来，奉贤区忧道资助的助学金家庭，有7户以农业为主，他们种植的农作物全部受灾，农民居住的大棚进水，有些积水漫过床铺，部分区域因暴雨导致断电，造成了这些农户生活的严重不便。

近日忧道为这些家庭送去大米、粮油、衣物等物资，希望鼓励这些家庭，树立信心，在忧道的关心帮助下，生活早日恢复正常。但愿农作物早日有所收成。

On 20th October, 13 sponsored families with 27 children were accompanied by 23 volunteers from  the Wyndham Hotel Group to spend a joyful day at the Shanghai Zoo.
 

Our Qingpu community centre welcomes migrant children from the neighborhood to come to spend time with other children. Lendlease has generously helped renovating the areas so that even when it rains, the children can still play table tennis or fushball or happily ride on the tricycles donated by APM in the courtyard. Every Saturday morning, we have a group of students from SCIS coming to our Qingpu centre to teach the migrant children dancing and cartoon drawing. In the afternoon, we have a twelve year old boy, Kaiser Ke, who has been helping Josephine to teach English with songs and drawings. In another room, Peiqing patiently explains about cutting arts and scratching arts to the students and they enjoy very much her teaching. Other volunteers like Chen Chongyan, Yang Qiuqian, Ken & Lucy will come whenever they have time, to read books with the children, play with them with board games and most importantly, to talk and listen to them. On Sunday afternoons, we have students from Shanghai Theatre Academy led by prof. Shen who come to teach them drama. A bread owner who is also from other province offers to give us a big box of bread to distribute to the children and they were delighted to taste different kinds of pizza bread, sausage roll, donut, minced pork bun etc. Occasionally, other charity organization will come with a program of activities with prizes and spend a quality afternoon with the children, whom normally do not want to go home when time is up as there is no one home to care for them most of the time.

On 10th September 2013, an afterschool program started at Qingpu as we learnt that most of the migrant children do not have a proper place at home for them to do their homework and the parents are not able to help at all. There are about 20 children each time from age 7 to 13. We have seven student volunteers from Shanghai Zheng Fa University who take turns to come to the centre to help tutor. Other volunteers, Grace Li, Yang Qiuqian and Liyan also come regularly to assist with their English and Mathematics homework. Some students will bring their Chinese book and ask the volunteers to help recite for them which shows that trust is developed through the process of caring. At the end of the session, the children with a smile thank the volunteers for their help.

Since April 2012, You Dao has started to run the community centre at Beiyaowan, Baoshan district to provide a better place for the migrant children to do homework with assistance from volunteers. It opens Tuesdays to Fridays 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. There are about 20 children everyday, who come to the centre right after school. Students from Shanghai University come according to a roster system. Three to six in a group will arrive punctually every day to tutor the children with their homework. During the tuition period, the volunteers will be able to answer the questions of the children especially in English and Mathematics which helps a lot because the parents are not able to help. We have seen a great deal of improvement in every single child over the period, not just academically, but in their sitting posture and habits. Some of them have gotten rid of the habit of biting their pencil, or to scribbling on the text book. The children have become tidier, happier, more cheerful and are eager to question and learn.

In mid August 2013, Camsing Global has generously donated twenty one boxes of stationary to You Dao Foundation that included colourful pens, felt pens, sign pens, correction pens, rulers etc. The stationary were given to the migrant children at kindergartens in Fengxian, our community centres in Beiyaowan and Qingpu. The little eyes were sparkling with joy when one by one they came to say thank you for the new stationary. Some said they would let the sister keep the colour pens – they do know how to share – and this is what we have been trying to teach them.

On 19th Oct 2013, seven sponsored families with five teachers and two volunteers from Stanford Associates spent a fun day at Fengxian Wuqiao Tong Zhi Meng Kindergarten. The families enjoyed it especially when they were playing with clay-dough creating animals from their imagination. A father of four made four colourful penguins which represented his four daughters, hoping that the daughters are as beautiful and elegant as the penguins. Outdoor activities were most welcome by the younger children and the tug-of-war is still the highlight of the whole event. Family pictures were taken and maybe in the future an old album will bring back a lot of good memories.
